“Vejigantes”

This vibrant collection of six paintings brings the Vejigante to life through a bold fusion of pop art, comic book aesthetics, and traditional Puerto Rican folklore. Each piece captures the spirit of these legendary masked figures with explosive colors, dynamic patterns, and expressive designs. Using gouache and acrylic paint, the artworks showcase intricate dot textures, thick black outlines, and exaggerated facial expressions, evoking both festivity and mystery. The recurring presence of the Puerto Rican flag ties the collection to its cultural roots, reinforcing the Vejigante’s significance in the island’s Carnival traditions.

The masks in the series each have distinct personalities, ranging from mischievous to fierce, symbolizing the blend of African, Spanish, and Taíno influences in Puerto Rican culture. Their toothy grins, intense eyes, and sharp horns leap from the canvas, while the layered backgrounds add a sense of motion and energy, as if they are dancing through a festival parade. The combination of traditional iconography with modern, graphic elements creates a fresh interpretation of this timeless folklore, celebrating Puerto Rican heritage with an electrifying, contemporary twist.
